League of Legends

League of Legends is one of the biggest video game hits in the whole world. What made this game so successful? One of the reasons was the free-to-play model. The game, which is completely free, does not require the player to spend any money. You could play for years without spending a penny. "How does this game earn money?" you might wonder. The answer is that the game features over 120 champions and skins for all of them. Normally, it would take a long time of playing to get all of the champions. However, with a few dollars, you could get any champion you wanted and a skin to make the champion look cooler. A few dollars here, a few dollars there, makes League very profitable. In August alone, it raked in $122 million. Another reason the game was really successful was the professional league that sprung up. The championships are huge events that attract thousands, even millions of people online and on-site. Even though these championships do not earn money, with the publici...

Europe's Bold Plan for a Moon Base Is Coming Together

Recently I read an article about Europe having plans for a moon village. The article explained that moon villages are much closer than people think, and that the plans have been around for a while. The only problem, however, was that Germany, which funded 45% of the project, was having a hard time getting other European countries to fund the other 55%. Recently, however, renewed interest in lunar exploration and a new director for the European Space Agency might turn things around. At the same time, the ESA is developing technologies that might allow people to survive on the moon. For example, 3-D printing technologies that can use lunar dust are being developed, which might allow colonies to 3-D print tools and even buildings. In addition, the British architecture firm Foster + Partners has gone so far as to design a catenary dome with a cellular structure that could guard an inflatable lunar habitat against both small pieces of debris and space radiation. I think this is an exciti...

Germany Culls 16,000 Turkeys After Detecting An Outbreak of Bird Flu

A crisis has occurred in Germany. Their turkeys are dying! An outbreak of the H5N8 strain of bird flu has affected three poultry plants in northern Germany. This has forced Germany to cull 16,000 turkeys and slaughter 92,000 chickens. The virus has affected four poultry plants in Germany and has affected 12 out of its 16 states. Israel and many other countries have also reported this virus. Scientists think that it originated from wild turkeys and chickens in the forests of Europe. I think this is a really bad thing, because as Thanksgiving descends upon the world, the demand of turkeys is even higher. Many less turkeys will now be sold, and some  of the ones that have already been sold could have this virus. However, I'm not sure how many Europeans celebrate Thanksgiving, so the impact will not be as large. This will make a dent in Europe's economy, albeit a very minor one.

Soccer vs. St. Joseph's

Today was the second game of the season, and it was a great game. I really think that I played well this time around. In the first half, I played two different positions. I started the game as left mid, and I did a mediocre job passing the ball around and playing defense and offense. I got taken off the field on the first round of subs, and it seemed like it was just going to be another game where I play just to achieve the minimum time each player has to play. Surprisingly, however, I got put back in at right back, where I think I did a pretty good job of preventing the opposing team from scoring. The first half was nothing spectacular, but the second half was when I really started playing well. I started out the half as left mid again. I got a pass from the defense, straight into four players from the opposing team. With a spin move that I've been practicing for some time now, I broke free and started dribbling down the field. I made a pass to the offense, feeling proud that I ...

Soccer

Yesterday was my first soccer game this year. At the start of the game, my friend Nick predicted that the other team would score within a minute of halftime, and that we would score two goals afterwards to win the game. Our team got an early advantage at the start of the game, pushing the opposing team back. We had several opportunities for shots, but none of them made the cut. They were either too high, too low, too wide, or too short. As the game dragged on, we were all disappointed that we had yet to make one single goal. When halftime came, the score was still tied 0 - 0. Everyone was getting frustrated, angry at why we hadn't scored yet. And then, disaster struck. The opposing team had scored! The mood on the benches turned gloomy and dark. For the next 25 minutes, neither team would score. With 3 minutes left in the game, it looked like the team that had been undefeated for two years would lose their first game in the season. However, the game was not over yet. With 2 minut...
