If you meet somebody new, and do something weird, the other person will probably think you are weird and stay away from you. But if you do something nice, they will probably want to be friends with you. This is because they don't know anything about you yet. So they start with a blank slate, and think that whatever they see first of you is what you are like. No matter what, though, their first impression will stay the same.
Also, think of George Washington. The first thing that will come to your mind is probably when he cut down a cherry tree and was honest to his dad about it. But if you think about the rest of his life, it's more obscure. This is because the cherry tree was what happened first, and it made a lasting impression on people, while the other parts of his life didn't. Even if he didn't want a good first impression, he wouldn't get a chance, as the people would already have their first impression of him, if not their latest impression.
